“TOYOTA 5大陸走破プロジェクト”が生んだ、地球という星のドキュメントフォトブック「5大陸 Trails Into the Unknown」が制作プロダクション spoon.さんのご厚意で刊行することができました。地球は星だったんだとあらためて感じる日々を、クルマたちが走る。抗いながら、傷つきながら、壊れながら、それでも進む。胸が熱くなるのはその姿が自分に重なるからだろうか。瀧本幹也と彼に師事した写真家 樋口兼一、杉田知洋江、片村文人、佐藤新也たちが記録した道とクルマ。未製本、ボックスというこだわりが、一枚一枚を手に取れる物語にする。未来のTOYOTAの体幹をつくる。そのためにクルマと向き合い、道を感じる純粋な時間を。TOYOTA5大陸走破プロジェクトは全世界のTOYOTAグループ社員からチームを編成してはじまった。2014年オーストラリア大陸、2015年北米、2016年南米、2017年欧州、2018年アフリカ、そして2019年にはアジア大陸へ。本書は、そのプロジェクトの立ち上がりから参加し、人とクルマの旅に同行していた、写真家 瀧本幹也をはじめとしたクリエイターチームが撮り溜めたドキュメントを、あらたなコンセプトで一冊のフォトブックとしてまとめたものである。パタゴニアの吹きすさぶ風、アラスカの凍てつく寒さ、アフリカの夕日と象の群れーー圧倒的な自然を前にした時、人も、人が作り出した文明の利器でさえも、自然の一部と化してしまう。地球もひとつの星だった。写真一枚一枚を手にとることでその感覚が共有されるはず。

オーストラリアの真ん中の砂漠で蠅と格闘し、野宿した。星が凄かった。アラスカで初めてオーロラを見た。想像より薄かった。アフリカのサファリから持ち帰った石は、今も大切にデスクに飾ってある。今はそのようなロケは残念ながらできなくなってしまった。この写真集は、瀧本さんをはじめとしたフォトグラファー達の世界各地での挑戦と美の探究、冒険の記憶が詰まっている。数年前だからできたあの過酷なロケは、時間が過ぎるととても愛しく、またいつか行ける日が来ることを切に願います。このような壮大なプロジェクトに関わらせていただいたことに心から感謝しています。ー 佐野研二郎（アート・ディレクター）

The cars roll on every day and I’m reminded that the earth is a planet. Resistance, damage, breakdown, but still moving on. Is it because these scenes overlap with ourselves that they stir emotions? The book features the roads and cars recorded by Mikiya Takimoto and some photographers who have studied under him: Kenichi Higuchi, Chiyoe Sugita, Fumihito Katamura, and Shinya Sato. Finessing publication in unbound, box form allows each photo to tell its story one by one as you hold them in your hands. To create the shape of the future Toyota. To that end, the photographers face their cars, time stripped bare, just themselves and the road. The Toyota 5 Continents Drive Project started with Toyota Group employees from across the globe forming teams. It went to the Australian continent in 2014, North America in 2015, South America in 2016, Europe in 2017, Africa in 2018, and the Asian continent in 2019. Taking a fresh conceptual angle, this single-volume photo book compiles what was documented by the team of creators, primarily Mikiya Takimoto, who joined the project from the start and also went on the journeys of cars and people. The raging winds of Patagonia, the freezing cold of Alaska, a herd of elephants at sunset in Africa: individual moments in time, in front of awe-inspiring nature, when people, and even the tools of civilization created by people, are subsumed into nature. The earth is a planet. That feeling should come across as you hold each photograph, one by one, in your hands.
It was crazy. On those journeys I felt as though I was hugging the earth. I’ll never forget the smell of the wind. I’ll never forget the cold bagel, frozen stiff. I’ll never forget the high-pitched sound of a glacier cracking. If life has meaning, it might be to put your heart and soul in this kind of landscape. The photographers were all beautiful. We camped in the desert in the middle of Australia, struggling with the flies. The stars were amazing. We saw the aurora for the first time in Alaska. It was thinner than I had imagined. The treasured stones I brought back from safari in Africa still adorn my desk. Unfortunately, location shoots like that are impossible now. This photo book is filled with Mikiya Takimoto’s and the other photographers’ memories of the challenges, explorations of beauty, and adventures in places around the world. With the passing of time, those tough location shoots, which we could accomplish because it was a number of years ago, have become dear to me, and I eagerly look forward to the day I can go back. Traveling the continents, I’ve seen many roads, sceneries, and people. Now, when I look at this pack of photos, I realize that I was looking at the earth at the time.
